Solar cells are usually made of silicon. That silicon consists of two layers. Under the influence of light, an electric current starts to flow between the two layers. That is why solar cells are also called photovoltaic cells, or PV systems for short. The yield of conventional solar cells is between 10 and 20%, with the cells with better yields usually being disproportionately more expensive.
